Can someone explain the oedipus complex? please!?

A young boy becomes independant and starts to feel competitive with his father. He wants to sleep with the mother (because that would be the ultimate form of beating his father--taking away his woman). He wants to kill his father so that he can achieve adulthood and be the 'alpha male' of the family
