Do I need photoshop to use a drawing tablet?

I am interested moving from doing my artwork on physical paper, to the digital "painting" medium. I've seen what can be done with drawing tablets and I am very impressed. I currently have the image manipulation program "gimp", will that be enough to use the tablet, or do I need to get something like photoshop?
